3D Alpha for Compound Graphics and Booleans
Honors Thesis Research, 2020
For my Honors Thesis in Computer Science at Dartmouth, I set out to create a three-dimensional analog to the 2D alpha channel. Using the Unity game engine and advised by Prof James Mahoney, I developed this 3D alpha channel, which is the subject of a forthcoming publication of mine. Shown left is an example of the 3D alpha channel at work performing boolean subtractions and novel material modulations on a complex model of a human arm. The simulation is extremely fast, capable of running in real-time on a virtual reality device, and produces striking results with a variety of potential applications.
